Whip It Good!

Whip It, Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut is a coming of age film disguised as a chick flick disguised as a sports movie. The movie takes on all of these classifications and handles them quite admirably, a credit to its talented and still alarmingly cute director. The movie follows the journey of Bliss Cavendar, played by the delightful Ellen Page, as she struggles to break free of the oppressive style of parenting employed by her mother (Marcia Gay Harden) and find her own way. Bliss ultimately finds her calling in the underground Roller Derby culture in Austin. She finds that she has a gift for the sport, and establishes an unbreakable bond with her teammates.

Whip It has the action and triumph of a sports movie and the angst and emotion of a coming of age film. The characters are well developed and multidimensional, and the story takes a few unexpected turns. Page's perfomance is particularly strong, the norm for such talented actress. She makes Bliss lovable and frustrating in the ways that teenage girls can be sometimes and convincingly conveys the inner struggle that we all face when we are trying to navigate through our post-adolescent years. Other good performances include Harden and Kristen Wiig, as Maggie Mayhem, who serves as a mentor figure for Bliss. Jimmy Fallon, as “Hot Tub” Johnny Rocket, and Andrew Wilson, as Razor, the coach of Bliss’ team, the Hurl Scouts, deliver very funny performances as well.

This movie will make you laugh, cry, and think. I highly recommend it. And its set in God’s country, the beautiful state of Texas.

So, you may ask yourself, “Why is this review on BBWF?” Great question. Besides the fact that it is truly a great movie—one of the year’s best so far—it is littered with women that, not only are very hot (the aforementioned Barrymore, as well as the walking sex toy that is Juliette Lewis), but some of the women in the flick, including many of the roller derby girls, are certified BBW. It is perhaps the best collection of tattooed and dirty-sexy BBW that I have ever seen in a mainstream movie. There is a member of Juliette Lewis’ team, The Holy Rollers, that has a massive tattoo across her chest that is perfect for this site. She is featured prominently during Bliss’ first trip to Austin in the film as well as the “food fight” scene. She is unbelievable. So, even if the movie doesn’t thrill you, any BBW fan should appreciate the volume of hotties in this movie.

The pic is missbrattyslut, who would fit right in with the Hurl Scouts or The Holy Rollers.

Enjoy your Saturday, people!
